Pizza Hut brings ‘Book It’ reading program into the digital age

  • Pizza Hut is bringing its 40-year-old “Book It” summer reading program into the modern age with the release of a new app designed to keep children reading during their extended breaks and prevent “brain drain.”
  • The new app, available in Google and Apple’s app stores, empowers parents and children to set summer reading goals, track their progress toward those goals and earn pizza rewards for achieving them.
  • The app is part of the QSR chain’s revitalized summer reading program, “Book It! Summer of Stories,” which encourages parents to stay engaged with their children’s reading journeys and sharpen their reading skills throughout the summer.

To participate, families can download the app and set their goals by June 1. Students who reach the reading goals set by their parents through the Book It app can earn one free Personal Pan Pizza per month in June, July and August.

“Book It has inspired a love of reading in millions of children since 1984,” said Lucila Cuello, chief people and culture officer for Pizza Hut, U.S., in a statement. “Now, with the launch of the Book It app, we’re making it even easier for parents to connect with their kids, set meaningful reading goals and inspire plenty of fun pizza-filled memories with their families. This new platform will help keep reading goals top of mind this summer – and turn progress into pizza.”

Pizza Hut first launched its Book It program in 1984 as a way to encourage elementary school-aged children to read. Since that time, more than 70 million children have participated in the program, and the chain has distributed more than 1.5 billion Personal Pan Pizzas through it.
